About 12 million of the newly unemployed were in North America, Japan and Western Europe, the International Labor Organization said. The jobless jumped by nearly four million in 2009.
The number of unemployed people worldwide reached 212 million in 2009, up 34 million or an unprecedented 19 per cent since 2007, the eve.of the financial and economic crisis, according to a study by the International Labor Organization.
The figure represents a global unemployment rate of 6.6 per cent last year, an increase of 0.9 per cent over 2007, the annual Global Employment Trends said.
Young workers were particularly hit hard, with unemployment rate up 1.6 points over 2007 to 13.4 per cent, the largest increase since 1991 and the earliest year for which global estimates are available.
The report said although economic growth is expected to be positive this year – the IMF said yesterday 2010 global economic growth would reach 3.9 per cent

Even the President concedes, it is Unemployment – The No.1 Problem of 2010 and one of the worst economic disasters since the Great Depression.

Until this problem is solved, the other issues may have to wait.

The unemployment rate continues to hover in the double digits,
The nation’s unemployment rate exceeded 10 percent in December. The underemployment rate, however, was 17.3 percent. Again, that rate includes folks who haveĀ  given up looking for work or who are working part-time because they can’t find full-time work. That’s the highest the rate has been since at least 1994, when the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) appears to have begun publishing it.

The situation is not the same in all states.
In Oregon, the underemployment rate is even higher — 20.1 percent. That ranks second highest behind Michigan. And that was as of the third quarter of 2009, the latest data available. Back then, the nation’s under-employment rate was at 15.2 percent.
